My husband and I had a wonderful happy life together, and the last thing I ever expected was Alzheimers – cancer possibly, as at one  time he had been a smoker.  You are just enjoying life, and each other, and you naively think, that it will continue for many more years; oblivious to the realities of life.  I had just retired, we were both comparatively young – we had so many plans…………….. If I’m honest, I began to notice very subtle changes in his personality and behavior a few years prior to his diagnosis in 2009.  He had always been such a caring, thoughtful soul;  full of energy, laughter and fun.     Whoever he met, he put a smile on their face.  He’d always wanted to go to The Falklands, so we had planned a grand trip to Argentina, Falklands and Chile.  We had a wonderful time in Argentina, been up to Iguazu Falls, and whilst there went on a trip through the Rainforest watching capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees.  That night in the hotel we went to bed, tired and happy, looking forward to the next day when we were due to go South to travel over to The Falklands.  About 2 o’clock in the morning, he woke up screaming, had no idea who I was, and despite my best efforts to tell him about our life; to him I was a stranger, telling him lies ………….and so our Alzheimer’s journey began……#AlanManningArt
